This actually happened today!

Me: (to student sitting in hall who belonged in the classroom) Hey so since you're not with your group inside the classroom does this mean you want to take the test instead of do the project.

Student: What the hell, don't talk to me like a child.

stunned I say nothing because I can't believe this person actually has the guts to say that.

Student: yeah you have nothing to say

Me: no I'm silent because I'm replaying this situation in my head, because I know you didn't just talk to me like that. I hope you enjoy taking the exam tomorrow.

***later***
Crap student to another student: Did you hear me put that Bi*** in her place.

Not crap student: no I had no idea what was going on.

Me: Please stop standing there talking about the situation, it is only making this worse.

Student: G** D***, what the f*** is your f***ing problem! Get off my f***ing back you b****.

Me: (calmly) okay well...

Student: yeah Mrs. all high and mighty do what the b****says.

Me: You're only adding to the situation...

Crap student: F*** you!

Student walks out of my class...

Me: Well on top of everything else that's ditching my friend...

Okay so honestly parents out there what has happened that some of these kids think that this is acceptable. This isn't the first flip out in a classroom, and I dare say not the last. This was actually a first for me, and I must say I am beyond words to describe how this made me feel in the moment. I actually automatically went to blogging, but let myself cool realizing that: one, this isn't exactly a student that one gets so excited to have in class, and 2 although I love that there are some students that feel comfortable enough to sit down at my desk and hold what to them is "important" conversation, I'm not in this line of work to make friends with little teenagers. I love Literature and love the vacation time... So if I have to put up with a couple ignorant people who think unjustly treating a human being like trash and using the f-word every other word makes them feel empowered so that I can get through to some students who will find the joy in a great book, I'll take it. There is something unspeakable about having a redneck country boy come up to you and devulge that he really enjoyed reading Their Eyes Were Watching God...

  1. That is just unbelievable. Do you have administration that backs you up in cases like that? No one should have to tolerate that.

  2. You handled that WAY more calmly then I would have. I know you had to control your rage.

  3. Let's see the kid was suspended, then right back in my classroom attitude, bad language and all.
